Canada with an ITSx of 60.3 is the best performing country

Canada with an ITSx of 60.3 is the best performing country by far, testament to the relative sophistication of its ICT industry and the high level of awareness of sustainability in that country. It rates well above average in all industry components. Canada also leads other countries surveyed in each index component, except Lifecycle. Its overall ITSx is more than five points above the international average. Whilst the performance is good in relative terms, in absolute terms most Canadian organizations still have the long way to go in achieving best practice ICT Sustainability. Read more

ICT Sustainability: The Global Benchmark 2011

The report summarizes the findings of the survey of 1,000 CIOs and senior ICT managers from around the globe, conducted in 2011 to determine the maturity of their ICT Sustainability practices and technologies. ICT is one of large consumers of energy, and is globally responsible for 3 per cent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. At current rates of growth in ICT usage, this is forecast to grow to 6 per cent by 2020. More importantly, ICT is responsible for 5 to 10 per cent of the typical economy’s total electricity consumption. In some organizations that rely heavily on ICT, such as banks, government and in many other administrative industries, ICT can account for up to 75 per cent of all energy consumption.

CEE Bankwatch Network

CEE Bankwatch Network works across the Central and Eastern European region to monitor the activities of the international financial institutions, foremost of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, European Investment Bank and European Structural & Cohesion Funds. The Network, along with the related programs like Well Spent, Counter Balance Multimedia Forum and some other, propose constructive environmental alternatives to the policies that are supported by the foregoing financial institutions.

Supporting these initiatives, an international team that develops the projects of UGN 2050, Kyiv Eco-Noo City and Ukraine GCC Network proposes to enchance the impact of these initiatives in Ukraine and the GCC countries, to create similar, new and more stringent ones, according to the UGN's requirements.

Australia loses ICT Sustainability Index 2011

Australia has been one of the four countries surveyed in 2010, with ICT Sustainability Index of 53.9. Its marginal decline 2011 year indicates that ITSx in Australia has lost momentum. There is significant decline in End User, from 62.3 to 51.8, indicating that many Australian ICT users may be suffering from “green fatigue” or initiatives have failed to become institutionalized. This is further supported by Australia’s very low visibility of the ICT power bill. Less than 1 per cent of ICT departments are responsible for ICT’s power consumption. Read more

Green ABCR Group, or BRACARUS

The pilot project to implement the concept of the United Green Nations (UGN 2050) is establishing the first ever in the world eco-political alliance composed of Australia, Brazil, Canada and Russian Federation, the countries that are currently eco-surplus in the terms of ecological footprint metrics (e.g., Ewing et al., 2010) and have powerful (in the terms of GDP) national economies. This up-to-date eco-political alliance, named the Green ABCR Group or BRACARUS, is designed with use of the modern pro-ecological approaches instead of (retro)territorial, (retro)political and (retro)economic ones being thus more progressive than all known retro-alliances or groups: BRIC (designed by Jim O’Neill in 2001), BRICS, G8, G20 and any others.
